Addie's Thai House

We haven't had Thai food for a while, and it's time to rectify that. Addie's occupies the space formerly held by Thai Buree (in a strip mall on the NE corner of the intersection of 141 and Olive Blvd) and all of the reviews I've read are glowing. Let's find out how good it is, shall we?

Pearl Cafe

Nestled between QuikTrip, mini-golf, Burger King, and a payday loan place is Pearl Cafe, a Thai restaurant that's gotten fantastic reviews. That's where we're headed - to the land of fast food and strip malls that defines N. Lindbergh - to sample delicious Thai cuisine.

This place is fairly new and has gotten decent reviews. Let's see whether it can dethrone Land of Smile as my personal favorite as it competes in "BATTLE THAI".

Wear your grins as we go to this is a very new Thai restaurant on the STL food scene and they're excellent. I've been twice and sampled several different dishes, all of them excellent. They use white pepper prodigiously, which works perfectly in their dishes. This may be one of the most authentic Thai restaurants in St. Louis and you should order your dishes appropriately spicy.

Now it's time for a spicy food fact! What's the difference between black pepper and white pepper?

Both are made from berries - or peppercorns - of the pepper plant (piper nigrum). Black pepper is made from berries picked when they are still green; they are cooked in water to break down cell walls and then dried in until they turn black. White pepper is made from berries that ripen fully on the vine before they are picked; they are soaked and scrubbed to remove the flesh of the fruit before being dried. The taste of white pepper is more subtle and smooth - it's just the seed and is missing flavor compounds contained in the outer fruit layer left on black peppercorns.

The reviews of this place look good, and the person who answered the phone seemed friendly. They appear to serve Thai and Japanese/sushi that's "among the best in town" according to the Post-Dispatch. It's somewhat hard to find, so the hint I'll pass on is that it's across from Crestwood Plaza in a strip mall. If you get leftovers, be sure to take note of their supposedly stiffer-than-normal plastic foam containers!

Thai Nivas Cafe

Brian's back for a few days and requested Thai. Apparently he hasn't been able to find a good Thai restaurant in Texas and has been craving the delicate flavors, the subtle mix of salty, sweet, spicy, and tangy that only Thai cuisine provides! (See the attached picture for an example of Thai food if you're not familiar with it.)

Thai Pizza Co.

Now, I know we were in the loop last time but this place looks pretty cool. It's a combination of Thai and Italian food. In addition to the 12 pizzas offered, they have a good selection of pastas, noodle bowls, salads, appetizers, and stir fry dishes. So if you're not into eating fusion cuisine, you should still be able to find something.
